Valeria Lorraine (Nelson) Schroeder, age 87, passed away Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24, 2018, in Chanhassen, MN.
Val “Babe” was born March 4, 1931, in Madelia, MN, to Alvin and Bertha Nelson, and spent most of her childhood growing up in Saint Peter, MN. After graduating high school and attending Gustavus Adolphus College, Val spent many years working for various companies, including Green Giant in Le Sueur, MN and the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., before marrying Harold Schroeder in September 1957. They lived and farmed the Schroeder family farm in Nicollet throughout their married life, raising four daughters. Val was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Nicollet. Her gardening skills were unparalleled, and there were always fresh flowers in the house and fresh food on the table. Val again entered the workforce, doing bookkeeping for Selby Manufacturing in Nicollet, and later, tax preparation for H&R Block in Mankato. In 1974, she started Schroeder Tax Service and continued her in-home business for many years. In 2003, after selling the family farm, Val moved to Saint Peter. In 2011, she moved to SummerWood of Chanhassen to be closer to her daughters. At SummerWood, Val continued using her green thumb, giving loving attention to the flowers and plants around the facility. Val was strong in her faith, and her cheerful and kind spirit will be missed by many.
Val is survived by her four daughters, Susan Ponwith, Eden Prairie, MN, Paula (Frank) Sterner, Waconia, MN, Linda Anderson, Eden Prairie, MN, and Stacey (Doug) Frauenholtz, Andover, MN; five grandchildren, Sam (Kelli) Sterner, Ryan (Emily) Ponwith, Josh Sterner (special friend, Megan Levis), Lauren Ponwith (special friend, Nick Struve), and Scarlett (Logan) Barnes; two great-grandchildren, Rhett and Layla, with a third due soon; one sister, Bette Johnson; two former sons-in-law, Bruce Ponwith and Jack Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. Val was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; a sister, Verona Crowe; and brother, Alvin Nelson, Jr.
Funeral service will be held 11am, Saturday, December 29, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, 1114 West Traverse Road, Saint Peter, MN. Visitation will begin at 9:30am until the time of the service.
