Leonard Albert Hansen

Leonard Hansen, age 90 of St. Peter, passed away peacefully in his home holding his wife and children’s hands on April 16, 2018.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. with the Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, in St. Peter, Minnesota. Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting Leonard’s family.

Leonard was born July 6,1927 in the Rock Island Railroad Depot in Hardwick, Minnesota, the second son of Clara and Leo Hansen. He attended Hardwick Grade School and graduated from Luverne High School in 1945. He was President of the Senior class, played on the football, basketball, and baseball teams and was also active in 4-H and worked at the Green Lantern and for the railroad. He met the love of his life, Irene Lapic, in school and married May 29, 1948 at St. Catherine’s Church in Luverne. In 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy and left for the Navy Academy at Anapolis. He attended Worthington J.C. and Augustana College, played football and received his B.A. in Education in 1949. He was a teacher, principal and coach in Magnolia and Tyler. He and his wife and 3 daughters moved to Luverne for an engineering and land surveying job in 1956. His son was born in 1961 and he moved with his family to St. Peter to work as a civil engineer for Komatz Construction in 1962. After Komatz sold out in 1983, he worked for Roadways Construction, Aero Asphalt, and Max Johnson Construction until he retired. He played baseball in Tyler and Luverne on several teams and was a member of the Shoreland Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf. He loved spending time entertaining at the Lake, making Aebleskievers, spending winters on South Padre Island, singing polka with the St. Mary’s Men’s Choir, being a member of St. Peter American Legion and Honor Guard and the Professional Engineers’ Association.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Irene; children, Darcel (Jerry) Reker of Mantorville, Therese (Michael) Sweet of Mankato, Steven (Julie) Hansen of Rochester, in-law, Mark Baldwin of Ft. Myers; grandchildren, Ryan (Sara) Reker, Brooke (Jason) Anderson, Leonard (Alisa Boswell) Sweet, Jon (Heather) Reker, Dane (Ginger) Sweet, Racquel Reker, Leo (Callie Thornton) Hansen, Louie Hansen, Lucy Hansen and Josie Hansen; great-grandchildren, Jaycee Anderson, Ellie Anderson, Anne Anderson, Regan Reker, Stella Reker, Vayda Reker, Ashlynn Sweet, Ava Boswell, Zayden Sweet, Axel Sweet, Zoe Sweet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Clara, brother, LeRoy and wife Betty, daughter, Leah Baldwin, granddaughter, April Baldwin, great-grandaughter, Grace Reker, in-laws, Frank and Mary Lapic, Bob and Delores Reisdorfer, and Grace Lapic.
