Irene M. Nelson, age 93, of St. Peter, died after a brief illness on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 27, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. St. Peter Funeral Home – Klein Chapel handled the arrangements.
Irene was born on August 4, 1923, to Otis and Anna (Quam) Midthun in Frost, MN. Irene graduated from high school in Rake, Iowa and would later attend Waldorf College. After her schooling, she worked for a short period at a bank in Elmore, MN. It is here that she met and married her husband, Gene Nelson. Irene and Gene began their married life in Seattle, Washington, where Gene was stationed in the Navy. Eventually, they made their longtime home in St. Peter. Irene worked as a financial supervisor for Nicollet County Social Services for 27 years. She loved people, and was especially known for her kind and generous spirit. She loved golf and enjoyed the many friends they made while wintering in Arizona. Playing cards, especially bridge, cooking, music and dancing were also a few of her favorite pastimes. She most of all loved her family and will be sorely missed!
Left to remember Irene is her daughter, Lynn (Tom) Burg; grandson, Mitch; sister, Colleen Brown; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene in 2008; sons, Terry and Greg; and brothers, James and Joel Midthun.
