Dr. George Robert (“G.R”) Haedt, age 87, of St. Peter, MN died surrounded by family on February 13, 2017 at Rivers Edge Hospital. George was born February 7, 1930 in Mankato, MN, to George Sr. and Florence (Olson) Haedt.
George graduated from Mankato High School in 1948 and then enlisted in the United States Army. He did his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and was stationed in Wuertzburg, Germany. While in Wuertzburg, he worked in the operating room of the Army Hospital, peaking his interest in health care. Upon completion of his Army commitment, George enrolled in Northwestern Chiropractic College and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1955. He continued his professional education, earning his certificate of membership into the American Council of Chiropractic Orthopedics. George met his bride of 62 years, Helga Else Mutzke, in Mankato and they were married on March 26, 1955 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He began his Chiropractic career in Robbinsdale, MN and in 1959 he and Helga settled in St. Peter to start his own practice.
George loved everything about nature and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time at the lake cabin on Lake Washington. He especially treasured the time with his grandchildren at the lake. He was fond of his memories traveling around Europe while in the service and, upon retirement, spent time with Helga renovating the house, traveling, puttering at the lake, and on many biking excursions together. Holistic health was his passion as well as his career and he often offered advice to anyone who would listen. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a member of the Rotary Club, American Legion Post, American Chiropractic Association, and Minnesota Chiropractic Association.
George is survived by his wife, Helga; son Jeffrey (Diane) and grandsons Ryan and Travis of Savage; daughter Susan and granddaughter Jessica of Minneapolis, and preceded in death by his father and mother.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017 with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 511 S 5th St, St Peter.
