Marie Frances Schaefer, 97, of Sacramento, California, died December 10, 2013, at Saylor Lane Healthcare Center in Sacramento.
Marie was born January 19, 1916, to Edward and Clara Lilla in Comfrey, Minnesota. Her parents both passed away within days of one another during the 1918 flu epidemic, leaving 4 young children to be raised by paternal grandparents, Peter and Caroline Lilla of Comfrey. At the age of 7, Marie moved to live with a maternal aunt and uncle, Ann (Bertrand) and Peter Schaefer of St. Peter, Minnesota, and was adopted by them on May 12, 1927.
Marie was educated at St. Paul's Catholic School in Comfrey, John Ireland School in St. Peter, and St. Peter High School, graduating in 1933. She subsequently attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937. She taught commercial classes in several Minnesota schools and then was employed as a secretary in the medical records department of the St. Peter State Hospital. In 1959 she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she shared a home with her sister, Elizabeth Lilla, and was employed by several firms, including Univac and Watson, Slater, and Weeks until her retirement in 1975.
Marie Schaefer was a devout Catholic who was a member of several parishes over her lifetime, most recently of Sacred Heart Church in Sacramento. She was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and enjoyed caring for her roses, playing a highly competitive game of Scrabble, and spending time with friends and family.
In recent years, her sister Elizabeth's failing health necessitated a move for both of them to Sacramento, California, where they resided at Mercy McMahon Terrace, and, later, Saylor Lane Healthcare Center. The sisters continued to be close companions until Elizabeth's passing in 2012.
Marie F. Schaefer is survived by three nieces and four nephews, the children of her brothers, Arthur Lilla of Comfrey, Minnesota, and Edward Lilla of Spokane, Washington. Her sister, brothers, adoptive parents, and natural parents all predeceased her.
Services and interment were officiated by Father Todd Petersen at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, St. Peter, Minnesota on December 16, 2013.
