Earl O. Nelson, age 77, of rural St. Peter went to his home in heaven on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at ISJ Hospital in Mankato.
The Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Norseland Lutheran Church in Norseland, with Rev. Craig Ferkenstad officiating. Burial will be at the Swan Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2009, at Norseland Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Earl was born on April 9, 1932 in New Ulm, MN, to Oscar and Cora (Hendricks) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended rural grade school in Brighton and Granby townships and graduated from Nicollet High School in 1950. Earl served in the Army for two years during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended Augsburg College for two years and Gustavus Adolphus College for two years and graduated in 1957 with a Geology degree. He worked in Louisiana and Mississippi three years as a Geologist. He was a surveyor for Standard Oil Company. He returned to Nicollet County and farmed until retirement in 1990.
He was united in marriage to Pernell Gilbertson September 6, 1964. She passed away September 19, 1986. They were members of Swan Lake Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school and held several offices in the church.
On December 26, 1987, Earl was united in marriage to Evelyth (Evie) Anthony at Norseland Lutheran Church and became active in the church serving as a deacon. Earl dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed the family fishing trips in northern MN. He enjoyed camping and was a charter member of the Camper Tramper Good Sam Chapter.
Earl is survived by his wife, Evie; children, Scott Nelson of Mankato, Corrinne (Darren) Ely, Jeanette (Kevin) Hewitt of Cleveland and David (Karrie) Anthony of Sturgeon Bay, WI; grandchildren, Angie (Chris) Glassel, Samantha, Derek, and Anna Ely, Ray, Elizabeth, Mark and Heather Hewitt, Erik, Jonathon, and Jordan Anthony; brother, Harold Nelson; sisters, Dorothy Christenson, Jean Jenson, and Mildred Torgerson; mother-in-law, Myrtle Nelson of Mahnomen; brothers-in-law, Robert (Ranae) Peterson, and David Peterson; sisters-in-law, Hazel Nelson, and Jean Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Conrad Nelson; brothers-in-law, Chester Christenson, Wallace Jenson and Ted Torgerson, and grandson, Isaiah Anthony; and brother-in-law, Paul Peterson.
