Cecilia Headlee, age 85 and longtime resident of St. Peter, died Monday, July 18, 2011 at River's Edge Hospital in St. Peter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Church of St. Peter. A rosary will be held by the Catholic Daughters before the service. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the St. Peter Funeral Home/Klein Chapel, and one hour prior to Mass at the church. A private family burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Cecilia Grace Headlee was born February 21, 1926 to John and Anna (Yuka) Doyle in Jersey City, NJ. She attended schools in Jersey City and graduated from Lincoln High School and business college. She worked at Dun and Bradstreet in New York City. She married Boyd C. Headlee on November 30, 1946 at All Saints Church in Jersey City, and took up residence in Coon Rapids and Rockwell City, IA before moving to St. Peter in 1950.
She worked with her husband in their business from 1953 to 1989 when her husband retired from his produce and trucking business. She was also employed at Four Seasons Department Store from 1978 to 1982, then joined the staff of the St. Peter Herald in December 1982 as receptionist, and immediately started writing her weekly column, "Hometown News and Views". She retired in 1996 after fourteen years of service. After retirement she became the weekend docent at the Treaty Site History Center of St. Peter. She was an active member of the Church of St. Peter, having taught C.C.D. classes, was a member of the choir, a song leader, a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1601, having held all offices and served as Regent for 3 years.
Her hobbies included reading and writing, and she was a member of one of St. Peter's oldest organizations, the Literary Club. She collected "teddy bears" and entertained many organizations and school children with her informative talks about the history and lore of toy bears. She was a resident of Ecumen Assisted Living in St. Peter.
Mrs. Headlee is survived by her husband of 64 years, Boyd; 3 sons, Kenneth of St. Peter, Tom (Doreen) of St. Peter, Paul (Yvonne) of Boise, ID; 2 daughters, Bethann (Charles) Otto of Nicollet, Deloris (Patrick) Tomczik of Northfield, MN; daughter-in-law, Paulette of Rockford, MN; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Anna; and son, John.
