William Fortier of Cleveland, MN passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at the age of 92. Visitation will be at St. Peter Funeral Home " Klein Chapel in St. Peter, MN, on Friday, September 2, 2011, from 4:00 -7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, in the Church of Nativity in Cleveland, MN with burial at the Calvary Cemetery in St. Peter, MN.
William, better known as Bill, was born in Bismarck, ND, on October 25, 1918 to William Fortier and Gladys (Orthmeyer) Fortier. Bill grew up and farmed with his father in North Dakota, Wisconsin, Canada, and finally settling in St. Peter, MN. He began his adult life by working in the shipyards of California and was then called to duty in the army in 1940. He trained in Helena, Montana with the First Special Service Force (The Devil's Brigade), which was the grandfather to the Green Brigade. He was stationed in Alaska, Africa, and Italy. He was wounded in Rome, Italy on May 14, 1944. After being shipped stateside, he was treated in a hospital in Heinz, Illinois, Battle Creek, Michigan, and was discharged from the military in Colorado. For his brave service he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, as well as several other medals. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW, and Disabled Veterans.
Bill married Berniece Funfsinn of Good Thunder, MN at St. John's Church in Mankato, MN on October 16, 1944. They farmed in the St. Peter/Mankato area until 1962 when the family moved to Cleveland, MN. He worked for the Le Sueur County Highway Department for 31 years. He was a parishioner of the Church of Nativity in Cleveland, MN. Bill liked to playing cards, dancing, woodworking, and visiting with friends.
Bill is survived by his wife and four children; twins Barbara Sayler of Engelwood, Colorado and Robert Fortier and wife, Barbara (Loeffler) Fortier of North Branch, MN, Nancy Rezac and husband, Richard Rezac of Waterville, MN, and Janean Numan-Fortier and husband, Daric Numan-Fortier of Minneapolis, MN. In addition he is survived by one sister, Delia Haack, seven grand children, eight great grand children, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mable Zeigler and Nettie Hopkins, and one brother, Joseph Fortier.
