Stella Marie Haugen entered eternal rest September 19, 2011 at Camilia Rose Care Center in Coon Rapids, MN. Stella was born to Thomas O. and Emma Haugen in Nicollet County MN on March 19, 1909, the last of their five children. She graduated High School in St. Peter, and attended Gustavus Adolphus College, graduating in 1929.
Stella lived a long, interesting life. She was among the first Women Marines which formed during WWII. She was stationed in San Diego for most of her tour of duty. Later on she was active in the WMC organization in Minneapolis and volunteered many hours at the USO Center at the Mpls airport. Her service and continued activities were very dear to her heart. Stella worked for many years as a proof-reader for the Minneapolis Star.
An avid traveler, Stella visited nearly every state and many countries around the world. She was a good friend to many and carried on a large correspondence of hand written letters. Never married, she was a loving and attentive Auntie to her two nieces and her nephew, and cared much for their spouses, children, and grandchildren as well. She volunteered many hours at the Minneapolis Library, among other organizations in Minneapolis. Stella loved the opera and plays, which she attended in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.
Stella is survived by her nieces, Beverly (Jim) Ryan of Wabasha MN and Bette (Al) Hoerth of Hope Idaho, her grand niece, Cathe Hoerth of Sandpoint Idaho, grand nephews James Ryan Jr of Rochester MN, Daniel (Judy) Ryan of Coon Rapids MN and Carl (Beth) Hoerth of Hope Idaho. She is also survived by 5 great-grand nieces and 3 great-grand nephews, along with a great-great grand niece. She is predeceased by her parents, Thomas O. and Emma Haugen, her brothers, Martin, Edgar, William and Richard, two nephews, Mark Ryan and Murray Ryan and one niece, Nancy Ryan. Stella was the last of many first cousins.
Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, September 23, 2011 at Norseland Lutheran Church in Norseland with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Norseland Lutheran Cemetery. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
