Jerome "Jerry" Martin Schmidt, age 81 of rural St. Peter joined his beloved wife, Margaret, in Heaven on April 9, 2010 in the peace of his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Church of the Nativity in Cleveland with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter. Visitation will be from 5:00 " 8:00 pm on Monday, April 12 at St. Peter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jerry was born on January 16, 1929 in Mankato to August "Gus" and Loretta "Betty" (Kraus) Schmidt. He grew up farming in rural St. Peter and graduated from St. Peter High School in 1946. He was united in marriage to Margaret Fischer on May 7, 1955 in St. Paul, MN and enjoyed 50 wonderful years of a loving marriage.

Jerry lived a lifetime of successful farming in St. Peter. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served on the Archdiocesan Rural Life Advisory Board of St. Paul and Minneapolis and was an active member in many church functions in Cleveland. Jerry was an excellent bridge player and a weekly swimmer. He had a passion for gardening and was well known for his creative pickling recipes and wonderful stories. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and passed on years of his wisdom to each of them.

Jerry is survived by his five children: Gregory (Katherine) Schmidt of St. Peter, Jeanine Bain of Houston TX, Carolyn (Jack) Penning of St. Peter, Kathleen (Bob) Vivian of Houston TX and Paul (Kim) Schmidt of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters: Joan (Jerry) Munson of Alexandria MN and Karen Bornholdt of Le Center; sister-in-law Johnna Schmidt of St. Peter and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, father and mother.
