Bertha E. "Bert" (Kamradt) Nelson, known to family and friends in latter years as "Gigi" (Great-Grandma) passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, at the age of 101 years, 9 months.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2010 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Alan Bray of St. Peter and Rev. Ralph Olsen of Woodbury, officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Bertha was born October 17, 1908 in a little farm house near Merrill, Iowa to Herman and Gesine Kamradt. She was united in marriage, September 26, 1928 to Alvin Nelson and moved to Minnesota, where the couple farmed until 1939, when they moved to St. Peter.
Bertha was a very outgoing lady. There wasn't a person she met that she didn't like and who in time became life-long friends. Bert was not afraid of hard work. Before marriage, she was a telephone operator in LeMars, IA. Upon moving to St. Peter she was an LPN at the Community Hospital as well as the State Hospital. She was a cook at the Nicollet Hotel, "hot lunch' at the St. Peter High School, and on to the Kahler Hotel in Rochester. She became the cook at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in St. Paul for nine priests. Bert was well versed on packing and unpacking for moving in her lifetime. She moved 26 times.
Bertha is survived by three daughters: Verona Crowe of Coon Rapids, Valeria Schroeder of St. Peter, and Bette Johnson of Lafayette; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister: Emma Larson of Hanska and several cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin (1965); son, Alvin, Jr. (1990); three sons-in-law: LuMar Johnson (2003), Harold Schroeder (2004), and Philip Crowe (2006); grandson-in-law Richard Jorgenson (2005) and great-grandson Maxwell LuMar Johnson (2001), two sisters and two brothers.
