Howard was born June 24, 1937 to Leo Cohrt and Clarice (Cohrt) Stanley in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a devoted husband, father, son and brother.
He went to high school in Waterloo, Iowa and went on to receive his B.A. from Stanford University in 1959, and later M.A.'s from Columbia University (Union Theology Seminary), and the University's of Marquette and Minnesota. Along the lines of his extensive education, Howard taught Religion, Latin and History at private boarding schools. He then went on to work many enjoyable years (1979-2002) at the Gustavus Adolphus Library. He loved being surrounded by books, in an environment of learning and questioning, and facilitating students and faculties search for knowledge through all forms of research material.
On January 4, 1968 Howard married Altamira in Toronto, Canada. They went on to have 42 years of a stable loving marriage.
Howard was a soft spoken man of few words; his mind was full of knowledge from many years within academia (from studies, to teaching, to working in the library, to constant reading). He was a man of the classics (literature, art, music). He loved nature in the form of gardening (vegetables, roses, dahlias, iris " to name some of his favorites), as well as natural wilderness, mountains, forests, animals, birds. Although often serious, he knew when and how to make people laugh in subtle and surprising ways. He loved both classic and off-color humor such as the Honeymooners and the Carol Burnett Show.
Howard lived with Parkinson's Disease for over 20 years, most of those years enjoying his regular work and personal life. Towards his last few years his mental and physical health deteriorated and he spent time at Pheasant's Ridge and Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter. The family thanks both places for their staff's love, care and patience towards Howard. Howard is preceded in death by both of his parents. Howard is survived by his wife Altamira, son's Geoff and Fred, brother Larry and sister Connie.
