John Matthew "Jack" Widi, a lifetime resident of St. Peter, died on Monday, October 18, 2010 at the age of 101 years.
Jack was born in St. Paul, MN on September 21, 1909 of parents Francesco and Isolina Widi, recent Italian immigrants. After graduating from high school, he attended the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for tile setting. During the Depression, he came to St. Peter and opened the St. Peter Sweet Shop with his brother-in-law, Tony Bravo. He served his country with honor in the Navy in World War II on the U.S.S. Baltimore and the U.S.S. San Carlos in the Pacific. Upon returning home in 1945, he went back to tile setting, which became his calling, and joined the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union. He retired at the age of 65 and lived out his remaining days in St. Peter with his sisters. Jack was a Lifetime Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 9713, American Legion Post 37, Disabled American Veterans Mankato Chapter 10, and the St. Peter Last Man's Club.
He is survived by his sister, Angela Widi, one great-nephew and five great-nieces, as well as twelve great-grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary (Widi) Bravo and her husband Tony, his niece Mary Ann (Bravo) Koenecke and her husband Richard as well his nephew John Bravo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home " Klein Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the DAV Mankato Chapter 10, Box 735, Mankato MN 56002-735.
