Wayne S. Pettis, age 87 of St. Peter, died on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Grandview Good Samaritan Center in St. Peter.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Peter. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home " Klein Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Wayne Steven Pettis was born December 16, 1923, to Cecil and Lavona (Rawlings) Pettis. He attended country school in Kasota Township and graduated from Central High School in St. Peter. Wayne was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy as a Yoeman until honorably discharged in 1945. In June 1946 he married Elvera Struckman and they had three daughters. Together they farmed in Le Sueur County with Wayne also selling Pioneer seed corn. During this time he served as chairman for the St. Peter School Board. Elvera and Wayne divorced and he married Sylvia Lurth in June 1980. Before his retirement in 1988 he operated a gravel pit and an auto part store.
Wayne loved to travel and going to the casinos. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, bowling, and playing cards. He had a passion for old cars. He had a knack for telling jokes and was a great conversationalist. Wayne loved life, his family and friends.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sylvia; his daughters and their husbands: Sandra and Bob Maas, Debra and Tom Ewalt, Gwen and Mike Gardner; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-daughters and their families; brother Willis (Jean) Pettis and sister Lenore Larson, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother-in-law Robert Larson.
