Dr. Robert H. Nelson, age 90 of St. Peter, died Monday, February 28, 2011 at Grandview Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. Peter.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Alan Bray officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m.,Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association and the American Red Cross.
Robert Harry was born March 20, 1920 to Henry and Signe (Erickson) Nelson in Ortonville, MN. He graduated from Ortonville High School in 1937. He attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, before joining the United States Navy in February of 1942 during WWII. After serving four years in the Pacific, Robert graduated form Macalester College in 1948. On August 11, 1950, he was united in marriage to Martha MacDonald. They were blessed with five children. In 1952, Robert graduated from medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. He established his medical practice in Benson where he worked until 1975. During this time period, Robert moved his family to Wake Island while he practiced with the Federal Aviation Agency. He also served as a civilian doctor for 3 months with the Volunteer Physicians for Vietnam program. Robert and his family moved to St. Peter where he continued his medical practice until he retired in 1985, but continued practicing on a part-time basis in various communities. On May 24, 1999, Robert was united in marriage to Jeanette Stien. He loved traveling extensively worldwide, his career, reading and especially his family.
Robert is survived by his wife, Jeanette of St. Peter; 4 children: Susan Schultz of Orange Park, FL, Robert (Liz) Nelson of Hastings, Nancy (Chris) Byron of Plymouth and Peter (Cassandra) Nelson of St. Peter; 2 step-children: Jeff (Mary) Stien of Waterford, MI and Jim Stien of Delhi; 7 grandchildren: Andrew (Kimberly) Schultz and their children Ava and Hunter, Luke (Hannah) Schultz, Stephanie (Colin) Nelson-Dusek, Andrea Nelson, Sean Byron, Mitchell and Margaret Nelson; 2 step-grandchildren: Shanon (Allan) Hoffman and their daughter Delia and Brian Stien; 2 brothers: Henry (Suzanne) and Eugene and 2 sisters: Ruth Osen and Virginia Engen.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; daughter Elizabeth Nelson; wife Pearl Hoberg and 2 sisters: Ada and Vera.
