Mary Alice Koppelman, age 93 of Cleveland, died at Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter MN on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2011 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cleveland, MN with Rev. Shelly Olson officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Lutheran Cemetery in rural Cleveland. Visitation will be held from 2 " 5 p.m., Sunday at St. Peter Funeral Home and continue one hour before the service at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cleveland or the charity of your choice.

Mary Alice was born in rural Cleveland on May 22, 1917, to Carl and Ina (Pettis) Wendelschafer. She graduated from Cleveland High School and Mankato Teacher's College. She taught in a rural school before her marriage to Leo C. Koppelman on June 17, 1936. They shared their lives for 52 years. The union was blessed with four sons, three daughters-in-law, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Alice was baptized, confirmed and married at Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she continued to be an active member. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, church organist, and enjoyed participating in Bible study groups.

Mary Alice volunteered for the Cleveland School District, LeSueur County Fair, and Cleveland Historical Society. She was named LeSueur County Citizen of the Year. She also served on the ISJ Hospital Auxiliary Board and volunteered in the hospital gift shop.

To many generations of children she was known as "Grandma M and M". She carried small bags of M and M candy in her purse and gave them to children who were in need of a sweet treat or a distraction. Her family and many community members may remember her homemade bran buns, potato salad and cooked rice.

Surviving are her sons and their family. Leo and Sandra of Cleveland, Karl John of Benedictine Living Community St. Peter, Ken and Lynda of Mankato, Dean and Mary of Cleveland; grandchildren and great- grandchildren, Tracy and Kirk Garrison (Taylor and Alex) of Dyer, IN, Michele and Rob Kluntz of Elk River, Peter and Lisa Koppelman (Brandon and Evan) of Cleveland, Ben and Lisa Koppelman (Sydney and Morgan) of Park Rapids, Allyson Koppelman of Chicago, IL, Chris Koppelman and fianc"e, Kristin Hill of St. Paul, Tim and Betsy Koppelman of Montgomery, Jill Koppelman of Cannon Falls, MN. She is also survived by her sister, June Rindelaub of Marshall, MN; nieces, nephews, and special friends, Dayton and Annette Fahning, New Hampton, IA.

Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Ina (Pettis) Wendelschafer; husband Leo; sister: Grace Fullenwider, granddaughter: Kari Koppelman; and brothers-in-law Jim Fullenwider and George Rindelaub.
