Irene I. Bell, born July 17, 1911 passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Grandview Good Samaritan at the age of 96. She was living independently until December of 2004 when she fell and recuperated at Grandview. Unfortunately, Alzheimer's had taken hold and she remained in their dedicated and compassionate care.
Irene was the youngest girl of nine siblings and is the last of the pioneering Laumann family who arrived in 1852 from Norway. The settler's original home on No. Washington was destroyed in the tornado but several other family homes are still in use. Irene grew up on Skaro Street and remembered playing at the Gault/Cox home Her father, Alfred, had a large garden where the pool and recreation park is now.
Irene graduated from SPHS where she played on the girl's basketball team and enjoyed music and art. She worked in the dining room of the Nicollet Hotel where she met and married Conrad Bell, a lineman for the phone company, Son James was born on July17, 1935. Daughter Judy was born on December 24, 1940.
Connie and Irene bought the B&M Grill (now the Bolo Sign Shop) from relatives and served countless hamburgers and fries to the college students and the many travelers who made it a regular stop. Later they purchased the former Otte's Caf" (where Domino's Pizza is now) and again served up delicious home cooked meals.
Irene was content to stay near home with her garden, friends and relatives, and thrived on the many visits from the grandchildren. She effortlessly turned out delicious meals and her lemon meringue pies were much in demand.
Irene is survived by daughter Judy of Palm Springs, CA., eleven grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Niece Margaret Wenner and nephew Bill Laumann are the only remaining Laumann relatives in St. Peter. Words cannot express the thanks to Margaret and Merton Wenner and their family for all they have done for Irene over the years. Husband Connie died in 1980, son Jim in 2000, and grandson Matt in 1988.
Services are at Union Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 3rd at 11 a.m. with Interim Pastor Steve Boots presiding. Funeral arrangements are by St. Peter Funeral Home and burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery next to Connie and among Laumann ancestors dating to the Civil War.
