Willard A. Johnson, age 86 of rural Norseland passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 10th at 10:30am at the Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church in rural Gaylord. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 9th from 5-7pm at St. Peter Funeral Home " Klein Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Willard was born on July, 18, 1921 in Winthrop, MN, the only child of Arthur and Myrtle (Johnson) Johnson. When Willard was 2 years old the family moved from Winthrop to Cosmos, MN there they lived until Willard was 10. At that time, the family moved to the Norseland area. Willard was a 1939 graduate of St. Peter High School.
Willard married Dorothy Goodman on Friday, October 13, 1944 at the Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church. Six weeks later, he reported for active duty with the US Army. He served in the Philippine Islands and in Japan in the army of occupation.
Upon returning home, Willard farmed in partnership with his father. In 1956, Willard and Dorothy purchased the farm where Willard continued to reside until the present time. He retired from active farming in 1986.
Willard and Dorothy enjoyed fishing and, for several years after retiring, had the best crappie fishing ever in the small lake next to the farm. They also enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family which includes: 2 daughters, Linda (Dave) Lurth and Kay (Jerry) Wegner; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. They also had a large circle of good friends and great relatives.
Willard and Dorothy were married for 58 years. For the last several years of their marriage, Willard was a dedicated and loving caregiver for Dorothy, who passed away in January of 2003.
Willard served on the Lake Prairie Township Board, the board of the Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church, the Norseland Creamery Board and was an enthusiastic participant in the McDonalds morning coffee group. He also enjoyed playing cards, keeping his large lawn looking like a park and most of all he enjoyed visiting with people; sharing stories and listening to others' stories.
