Rita Mae Willaert, age 56 of St. Peter, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the Bendedictine Living Community after an eight year battle against ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her family and will always be remembered for her strength, determination and passion for life.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2008 at the Church of St. Peter with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Sunday at Church of St. Peter with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Rita was born August 21, 1951 to Aloysius and Cecilia (Danzer) DeVlaeminck in Mankato. She was a 1969 graduate of St. Peter High School and went on to vocational school in Mankato. She was united in marriage to Richard Willaert on June 24, 1972. She worked at Anderson Law Office in LeSueur for 25 years before going to work at Exclusively Diamonds in Mankato, a job that she has worked for the past ten years. Rita's work and passion for selling jewelry have been an inspiration to all those who have come to know and love her. Through her fight against cancer, she has showed those around her how to live each day to its fullest. Rita designed a butterfly pendant to raise awareness for cancer. She was a member of the Church of St. Peter, local chapter of the Cancer Society, Relay for Life, where she was an honorary chairperson in the Blue Earth County Chapter. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, her flower garden, shopping, boating, and horses. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Willaert; three daughters, Sharry (Tom) Schmid, Sara (Felix) Rosado, and Becky (Charles Little) Willaert; four grandchildren, Zachary Schmid, Luke Schmid, Jordan Rosado, and Brock Schmid; sisters, Sharon (Jim) O'Connor, Karen (Leonard) Warren, Sandy (Konrad) Elliot; brother, Keith (Laura) DeVlaeminck; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Mary Willaert; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Richard "Dick" Hager.
