Paul J. Vetter, Jr. and Shirley M. Vetter, residents of St. Peter, passed away on Sunday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 22, 2008 respectively.
Paul, age 85, died from amyloidosis, a rare bone marrow disease. Shirley, age 83, died from complications following a heart attack. Paul and Shirley were married 61 years.
A joint funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Church of St. Peter (1801 W. Broadway) in St. Peter with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Thursday July 24, with a prayer service at 7:00pm at the church and will continue one hour prior to the service at church.
Shirley Margret Vetter was born on November 30, 1924 to Fred and Mable (Wilsey) Solberg in Yucatan, Houston Co., MN She graduated from Houston High School and Winona State University. She also attended Eau Claire State University in Wisconsin and Mankato State University. Shirley taught school in Houston County, Kasota MN, Menomonee WI, Grey Eagle MN and Nicollet MN.
Shirley married Paul J. Vetter, Jr. in St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Peter on June 9, 1947. They lived in Menomonee WI, Grey Eagle MN and Nicollet MN before moving to St. Peter in 1954. Shirley was active in St. Mary's Church Guild and served on the church council for seven years. She did volunteer work with the Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts, and also at the Senior Nutrition Site for seven years. Shirley enjoyed homemaking, traveling, playing cards, gardening and reading.
Survivors include one daughter Jeanne Jones (Dr. Richard) of Rochester, MN; two sons: Thomas Vetter (Carol) of Crystal, MN and Paul Vetter III (Mary) of Eagan, MN; five grandchildren: Lori Jones Thomasson (Brian) of Fargo, ND, Capt. David Jones of Rochester, Nicholas Allison, and Joseph Vetter of Eagan;three brothers: Eugene Solberg of LaCrosse WI, Glen (Avis) Solberg of Ettrick WI and Bradley Solberg of Houston MN; two sisters: Helen Gehres of Stockton MN, June (Dale) Omodt of Houston MN; sister-in-law Dorothy Solberg; and brothers-in-law Leigh Fitting and John Palmer. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul; infant daughter Yvonne Ann; her parents; two sisters: Winnifred Fitting and Elizabeth Palmer; one brother; Merle Solberg; brother-in-law Paul Gehres; sister-in-law Diane Solberg
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Peter Community Hospital, Calvary Cemetery or John Ireland School.
