Samuel E. "Sammy" Sanford, age 79 of St. Peter, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, August 18, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter with Pastor Don Holmstrom officiating. Burial will be in Kasota Hill Cemetery, Kasota. Visitation will be from 2-6 pm on Sunday at St. Peter Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at church. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Samuel was born on February 10, 1929 in Lincoln County, SD. He graduated high school in 1947. He lived in Beresford, SD until 1950, when he moved to Sioux Falls. On July 6, 1957 he was united in marriage to Gena Lee Tripp. While living in Sioux Falls, he worked in highway construction.

In 1960, they moved to St. Peter where he worked for Komatz Construction Company, and he also worked eight years for Larson Ski Factory. Samuel retired in 1994 after working 17 years for Winco in Le Center.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in St. Peter and enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, playing piano and music.

Samuel is survived by his wife Gena Lee of St. Peter; children: Lorena (Don) Allen of Park Rapids MN, Patricia (Mike) Torgerson of Kasota, Carolyn (Ron) Hokanson of Mankato, Charlene Sanford of St. Peter, Jeff (Luanne) Sanford of St. Peter and Robert Sanford of Newport MN; 16 grandchildren: Denise Braun, Michelle Sanford, Michael Sanford, Brian Allen, Melinda Allen, Michael Torgerson, Bradley Torgerson, Susan O'Malley, Donna Killion, Shawn Sanford, Brandie Sanford, Casey Rubischko, Cassidy Sanford, Jodi Zimmerli, Troy Sanford, Spencer Sanford and Greg Schmidt; and 22 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Alfred and Ruth Sanford, one sister Athleen, one brother Marlyn, son Michael and mother-in-law Rose Burgett.
