Richard M. "Dick" Bresnahan
Richard M. "Dick" Bresnahan, age 82 of St. Peter, died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Grandview Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. Peter.
Memorial Mass will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Church of St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in St. Peter. Visitation with the family will be from 4-7:30 p.m., Monday at St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to John Ireland School or the St. Peter Saints Baseball Association.
Dick was born April 10, 1926 to Michael and Amelia (Schuck) Bresnahan at his grandmother's North Star Store in Oshawa Township. He attended the little red school house next to the creamery and North Star Store and St. Peter High School.
Dick served his country during World War II, joining the Navy in 1944 then was honorably discharged in 1946. It was said he started the only baseball team on a Navy ship.
Returning home from the war he went to work for Meldon Dairies, June Dairy, Headlee Produce and Rosenberg Produce. In 1966 he was elected Nicollet County Treasurer retiring in 1992. In 1975 he was chosen second in the nation for County Treasurers by the National County Treasurers.
Dick was involved in many organizations during his lifetime including, Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce, VFW, and was the District Director for Babe Ruth Baseball. He coached Babe Ruth Baseball from 1972-1975 which culminated with the 1975 State Championship Babe Ruth team. He also coached and supported Legion Baseball which resulted in two trips to the State Tournament. He was an avid supporter of the St. Peter Saints Baseball Association.
He also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bowling, hunting, trapping and following his children and grandchildren's many sports teams. He was always a willing volunteer where ever needed.
He was married to Regean Volk on July 12, 1948 for 59 years before her death in October of 2007.
Dick is survived by his children, daughter, Rita and son-in-law Gene Kellen of San Angelo, TX; sons, Ron and daughter-in-law Monica of St. Peter, and Bob and daughter-in-law Doreen of Edina; eight grandchildren, Paul Poncin and wife Tracy, Rebecca Vernon and husband Bill, Bethann Rakowitz and husband David, Katie, Thomas, and Valerie Bresnahan, and Jay and Jamie Bresnahan; four great-grandchildren, Madeline and Derek Poncin and Ace and Sarah Vernon; brother Roger Bresnahan of Prior Lake; sister-in-law, Marilyn Bresnahan.
He was preceded in death by his wife Regean, his parents, brother, John Bresnahan; sister-in-law, Myra.
