Martha F. Long, age 83 of St. Peter, MN, passed away peacefully on Oct. 1 at the St. Benedictine Care Center in St. Peter surrounded by family and friends. Preceded in death by parents, Ralph Corey and Fay Rasmussen, her brother Ralph Corey II, and her loving husband of 43 years Dr. Robert F. Long. Survived by her son, Robert C. Long(Karen) of St. Paul, her two grandchildren, Nicholas and Kathryn Long, and her much loved nephew, Ralph Corey III, and niece, Kathy Corey.
She was born in Kenosha, WI, graduated as Valedictorian of her St. Louis Park, MN High School Class, and with Honors from the University of Minnesota. She worked as the head dietician at St. Peter State Hospital where she met Dr. Robert Long, a staff psychologist at the Hospital. Martha was very involved in the St. Peter Community, volunteering countless hours for numerous organizations and assisting her dozens of friends and anyone else whenever they needed help of any kind. She was an avid reader and loved to recommend and give books and periodicals to all her family and friends, including the nurses and staff at the St. Benedictine Center, who took such wonderful care of her in her final weeks.
Martha loved the outdoors, was an amazing gardener, and could identify every plant, flower, and bird that one could ever imagine. She also truly believed it was better to give than to receive and lived out that philosophy every day of her life, leaving hundreds of people the beneficiaries of her sincere generosity.
In honor of her love of autumn and Halloween, her services will be held on Oct. 17 at 10 am at St. Peter Catholic Church as a celebration of fall and her truly wonderful life that has touched so many. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. St. Peter funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
