Donald Edward Burch, age 92, of St. Peter, died on November 23, 2008 at Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Union Presbyterian Church, 3rd & Locust, St. Peter.
Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel.
Don was born in Pollock, South Dakota to Harry L. and Doris Emma (Hayes) Burch on October 6, 1916.
He married Marilla Elizabeth Fink on June 15, 1941 in Woodbine, Iowa. Don attended Pollock Grade and High School and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1938. He taught school in Aplington, Iowa, was Principal at Hudson High School in Hudson, Iowa, and was Superintendent at Geneva Consolidated Schools in Iowa. In 1946, he joined his father in the farm implement business. He owned and operated Burch's Shoe Store from 1953 until he retired in 1981.
Don was active in community and civic affairs, serving as President of the St. Peter Chamber of Commerce, was a member of Rotary Club, the Community Hospital and Healthcare Board, Shoreland Country Club. He volunteered for the Food Shelf, Meals-On-Wheels, and St. Peter Community Health Center. He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church where he served on their Board of Elders. Don and his wife were chosen as Nicollet County Outstanding Senior Citizens in 1998. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, fishing and all spectator sports.
Survivors include his wife Marilla, son Bradley (Jane) Burch of Davenport, Iowa, grandchildren: Sara (Al) Lown and Paul (Laura) Burch all of Omaha, NE.: great grandson Henry Robert Burch, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Burch of South Carolina, and Betty Burch of Florida, Cindy (Adams) Ufere of California, numerous nieces and nephews, and foreign exchange student Laurens Vlasveld of Delft, Holland.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Lesley in 1959, parents, brothers: Robert and Leslie Burch, sisters: Betty Tillisch and Peg Murphy, and foreign exchange student Clodualdo Medel of the Philippines.
