Richard Spiess, age 87 of St. Peter passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008 at his home.

Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in St. Peter. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Monday, December 15th at St. Peter Funeral Home -Klein Chapel with a 6:30 pm prayer service and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday.

Richard was born on November 10, 1921 in St. Peter to Stephen and Minnie (Schabert) Spiess. He served in the US Army from January of 1941 until being honorably discharged in January of 1945. On February 16, 1946 he was united in marriage to Alice Dysart. Alice passed away in 1975. He later married Ilene Hughes Lamm on March 25, 1977.

Richard worked with the State of MN for over 25 years. Throughout those years he also worked as a gravedigger in the area, kept gardens through the summer months, enjoyed squirrel hunting and mushroom picking. In his later years he enjoyed playing cards, working with his stamp collection, watching the Vikings and Twins. He especially enjoyed time with his great grandchildren and their little visits that brightened his day.

He was very active in the VFW where he was a lifetime member. He was the commander several times as well as holding many other positions. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 37 and the Last Man's Club.

Richard is survived by his children: Nancy (John) Woods of Cleveland, Ric (Margot) Spiess of St. Peter and Tom Spiess of Kasota; grandchildren: Tara (Jim) Smith, Jana (Pat) Kunz, Shawn (Sara) Woods, Danielle (Nathan) Bannick, Brielle (Dustin) Swenson and Andrea Spiess; great grandchildren: Allison and Austin Smith, Noah and Logan Kunz, Anna and Hailey Woods and William and Warner Bannick; step children: Diane Gerlach of Kasota and Dave (Mimi) Lamm of North Mankato; step grandchildren Matt Gerlach, Kevin and Jason Lamm, Tami (Jami) Woods - Dasilva, Lisa (Brent) Woods - Hilton; step great grandchildren: Taylor, Julia and Cara Woods, and Emma and Luke Hilton; and sister-in-law Madeline Spiess of Madelia.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Gracie Himmerich and Elaine Spiess; and brothers: Jerome, Stephen and LeRoy.
