Donald Ray Mayo, 71, passed away on July 14, 2009 at his home after a short illness. He had been diagnosed with acute leukemia and was receiving treatments in Rochester when he suffered a stroke. He returned to his home and was surrounded by family during his final days.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter with Pastor Alan Bray officiating. Visitation will be Friday, July 17, 2009 from 4pm to 8pm at St. Peter Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.

Don was born September 1, 1937 in Sheldon, Iowa to Milo and Lucille Mayo. His dad traveled from plant to plant working with Hallett construction. Don and his family moved where the construction work was available. He attended kindergarden in Jordan, Minnesota, finishing his schooling in St. Peter, graduating from St. Peter High School in 1955. After graduation he moved to California and lived with his brother Bob for a year, while working for Monrovia nursery. Returning home to St. Peter, he worked for 6 months with Bolton and Menk. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1961. Don served on the Kermit Roosevelt, a repair ship based out of Long Beach, California. He then went overseas on the aircraft carrier, Kearsage. He then served on the USS Graffias based out of Sasebo, Japan for two years and traveled to China, Phillipines, Okinawa and Taiwan. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he went to work for the St. Peter Greenhouse where he has worked for the past 47 years.

Don was united in marriage to his wife Shelley on November 27, 1976. He enjoyed traveling, (especially 22 years of trips to Branson, Missouri), country music, camping and restoring his 1925 Velie automobile.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Shelley, two brothers in law, Lee Gansen (Jean) of St. Peter, Rich Macrafic (Cindy) of Rochester, two sisters in law, Deb Schimek of Byron Illinois, and Jean Mayo of St. Peter, two godchildren, Nicholas Gansen of St. Peter and Chris Mayo of Mankato, and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Bob, Earl, and Maylon (in infancy), and one sister Jean.

Don was a member of First Lutheran Church in St. Peter, American Legion, VFW, and Redmen Club of St. Peter.
