Herb was involved with agriculture his entire life. He was on the ground floor of the commercialization of artificial insemination of cattle as a field technician for Minnesota Valley Breeders in the 1940's until his retirement in 1984. He saw the evolution of the industry as he also worked for Midwest Breeders and 21st Century Genetics (now CRI). His close association with farmers and dairy producers led to his support and mentoring of 4-H and FFA youth, and involvement with the Extension Service and agriculture industry organizations.
His life was his work and his work was his life but God, family, church, and community service came first. He served several terms on the St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church Council. Herb was a member and past president of the Rotary Club, past president of the St. Peter Chamber of Commerce, for many years was a member and officer of the Nicollet County Fair Board and served on the St. Peter School Board. After his retirement, he and Luella delivered Meals on Wheels, was a volunteer driver for senior citizens and continued his life-long interest in gardening as well as having more time to enjoy his children and grandchildren.
