Leland L. Poppen, age 83 of St. Peter, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for the purchase a tree for the Benedictine Living community. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Leland was born on January 9, 1926 in Allison, IA to Ralph and Carrie (Pagel) Poppen. He was baptized on January 25, 1926 in Allison, IA. He served in the United States Army from September of 1950 until September of 1952 in Korea. He was united in marriage to Lois H. Meyer on September 5, 1959 at Presbyterian Ministries in Fulda, MN.
Leland was employed as an auto mechanic at Snell Motors for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Mapleton fire Department, which he enjoyed very much. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Leland enjoyed wood-working, vegetable gardening and watching his son and grandson play their favorite sports. He had been attending many of his grandson's baseball and basketball games.
Leland is survived by son and daughter-in-law: Timothy and Tammy, and grandson Chad, all of St. Peter; 2 sisters: Gladys Ray and Phyllis Shock; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lois in 2008; parents; 5 brothers and 6 sisters.
