Kathleen J. Hamrum , 87 of St. Peter, died on October 19, 2009, at the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter after a brief illness.
Kathleen Jean Killian was born on March 22, 1922, in Seymour, Mo., to Jennings Bryan Killian and Frances Anne Williams Killian (later Robertson). She spent her childhood in Springfield, Mo., where she graduated from high school in 1939 and from Southwest Missouri State University in 1942. After graduation, she taught elementary school for four years.
She married Charles L. Hamrum on April 24, 1944, in Springfield. In 1946, she and her husband moved to St. Peter, Minn., where he completed his bachelor's degree at Gustavus Adolphus College, then moved in 1947 to State College, Pa., where he earned a master's degree. They returned to St. Peter in 1949; her husband taught at Gustavus Adolphus College for 39 years. She was a long-time member and benefactor of Trinity Lutheran Church, and she was known for her prowess as a needlework expert, producing hundreds of knitted, crocheted, embroidered, and needlepoint pieces over several decades. In early August, 2009, she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, and she died on October 19, 2009, having enjoyed a steady stream of calls and visits from her many friends as well as her family. The family expresses gratitude to all of the wonderful caregivers who made her last months comfortable and pleasant.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kenneth Max, her sister Evelyn, and her husband. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Hamrum Rutz and her husband Roland Rutz, Northfield, Minn.; a son, Kenneth L. Hamrum, and his wife Connie Hamrum, Fergus Falls, Minn.; and three grandsons, Paul Xavier Rutz and his wife Whitney Light Rutz, Lafayette, Ind., Karl Gustav Rutz, Northfield, Minn., and David Charles Hamrum and his wife Kateryna Zhdanovych Hamrum, College Park, Md.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on October 31, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter, followed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials to the Charles L. Hamrum Scholarship Endowment at Gustavus Adolphus College are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by the St. Peter Funeral Home.
