Doug was born on April 21, 1925 to Stella (Wagner) and Fred Pyan in Milwaukee. He spent his years to age 17 in Marathon, Wisconsin, when the family moved to Sleepy Eye. Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the SEABEE Corps, and served in the South Pacific. In later years, he enjoyed several reunions with his service comrades. After the war, he both tried his hand at several occupations and met Marian. He was hired by Geo. Hormel Foods in 1947 and worked as a livestock buyer in Redwood Falls and St Peter for nearly 40 years. Doug brought his family to St Peter in 1956 and soon after was heavily involved in both church and community affairs. The church Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus were two organizations with which he devoted many hours over the years. He was the voice of bingo and with the KC's he served as Grand Knight, District Deputy and achieved status as a 4th Degree Knight, plus in 1969 was a delegate to the National Convention.
His activities within the St Peter community included serving as Mayor of St. Peter from 1971 to 1986, becoming instrumental with a small group of friends in reviving town team baseball, supported youth sports, and maybe most famously started the Chamber's BBQ Chicken dinners in the park. Seasoned and cooked to his orders, were literally tens of thousands chicken quarters over 35 years.
Doug served on various boards, including the 1972 and 1976 Farmfest Board of Directors and the Region 9 Board of Directors. He tirelessly volunteered for his community with programs such as Meals on Wheels and in January 1973 he received the WCCO Radio Good Neighbor Award.
He most loved his family, his children and their families as they grew, but also was a friend to many, in particular the coffee gang and his fellows at the Legion Club. He manned several positions over the years at the club and was a member of the Last Man's Club. Also, he enjoyed many vacations, ballpark tours and Canadian fishing expeditions with his dear friend Buz Hoffman.
