Don was a devoted, robust, hard-working man of few words but an enormous heart. He loved his family and most of all his bride of 58 years, Marie Daun. He enjoyed spending time at their cabin on East Jefferson Lake. Whether it was taking their children water-skiing in the summer, ice skating in the winter or just visiting with family and friends, the cabin was where he felt most at home. His hobbies included woodworking and growing popcorn.
Don was born June 12, 1923 in Waterville to Bill and Katherine (Schramsky) Dawald. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Waseca, MN. During WWII, Don enlisted in the Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific in the First Marine Division. After the war, he attended St. Mary's college in Winona and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Marie Josephine Daun of St. Peter on November 3, 1951. They raised 8 children in Bloomington. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This career supported his belief in protecting the environment. He instigated a grant and spent hundreds of hours testing and working with the DNR to clean up the Jefferson chain of lakes.
