Janet Claire was born December 19, 1940 in Mankato to Erwin and Olga (Preuss) Neubert. After high school she graduated from Bethany College and then Mankato State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She taught one year in Winterhaven FL, then returned to MN teaching in Montgomery and St. Peter. She married Duane A. Schultz on August 15, 1964 at Immanuel Lutheran in Mankato. Janet took time away from teaching to raise her family, and later was one of the founders of Little Lambs Preschool in 1980. Upon her retirement from teaching in 2002, she began a new career in writing. She was an award-winning published author and had three historical fiction children’s novels. She became a writing instructor at the Loft Literary Center and the Institute of Children’s Literature. She traveled throughout MN with Duane researching her novels. She was active in her church, the Art Center, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Night Writers, Genre du Jour and the Institute of Children’s Literature Network. Janet enjoyed calligraphy, playing organ, cooking for her loved ones, being a grandma and especially spending time with her family.
Left to cherish their time with her are her husband of 55 years, Duane; children: Steven (Debra), Stacey, Christy (Jacob) May, and Charles (Heidi); grandchildren: William and Isabella Schultz, Alec and Conner May and Ethan and Erick Schultz; brothers: Dr. Rodney Neubert and Bruce Neubert; sister-in-law Marlene Lind; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Wayne Neubert; sisters-in-law: Kathy Neubert, Violet Neubert, Nona Neubert and Lorna (Gordy) Quiram; and brother-in-law David Lind.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ecumen Prairie Hill and St. Croix Hospice for the loving care they provided to Janet.
