Mary Kolb, lovingly known as Dolly, a cherished daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, in Saint Peter, Minnesota, at the age of 76.
Born in Austin, Minnesota, in July 1948, Dolly was a graduate of Pacelli High School, Austin State Junior College, and Mankato State University. She dedicated her life to caring for others, working for the state of Minnesota and MVSAC as a caregiver for the mentally disabled and later at nursing homes for the elderly. Politically active, Mary also had a deep commitment to her community, delivering newspapers, volunteering extensively, serving as a census worker, and supporting numerous social causes. She also took part in elections, caucuses, community demonstrations, and walks to advocate for social issues close to her heart. She had the honor of working alongside political leaders and was a passionate advocate for women's rights.
Mary always cared more for others than herself, selflessly giving her time, resources, and energy to those in need. Her compassionate nature was evident in all aspects of her life, from her work to her personal relationships. Dolly loved talking to people, and her witty sense of humor was a hallmark of her personality. She often delighted family and friends with her clever "mom jokes," bringing smiles and laughter to those lucky enough to know her.
In addition to her community work, Mary was a talented author, having written two books and published more while also contributing as a writer and editor to newspapers including Devil's Advocate, the JC Spectator, Saint Peter Herald, and Mankato Free Press. Her writing was a reflection of her creative spirit and caring heart, leaving behind a lasting impact on those who knew her.
She is survived by her son, John (Rachel); her daughter and best friend, Mary; three grandchildren, Alex, Nicholas, and Caleb; and her sisters, Jean, Diane, and Judy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her former partner Joseph Kao; and her sisters, Bonnie, Linda, and Ann. Mary will be remembered as a considerate daughter, loving mother, doting grandmother, devoted sister, great friend, and passionate advocate for justice and care.
