Steven Mark Mikelson, age 71, passed away peacefully at 1:03am on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota after his courageous battle with cancer.
Steve was born February 26, 1953 in Clarkfield, Minnesota to Milo Lefue Mikelson and Marcella Roslind (Friberg) Mikelson. He was a 1971 graduate of St. Peter High School and attended South Central College, earning a two-year accounting degree. He was a member of the 1st Lutheran Church in St. Peter throughout his life. He married Nancy Roegner on June 6, 1981 and soon after welcomed their two sons, Adam and Benjamin. He worked in the St. Peter and Mankato area throughout his life, including the Swedburg Drug Store, Nielson Chevrolet, and Clements/Mankato Motors until his recent retirement. He also enjoyed occasional bartending. Steve played slow pitch softball on the Walters Brothers team, was an avid pool player, and participated on many other teams throughout his life. He also loved coaching, umpiring, and watching his two sons play in various sports. He was fortunate to have made and developed many friendships and an amazing sense of community through all his adventures. Steve was known for his famous dill pickles and making the best sandwiches ever. Steve loved spending time family especially vacationing to Duluth, Bemidji, Las Vegas, Florida, Arizona, Seattle, Denver, and Okoboji. His newest favorite delight was spending time with his grandson, Baker aka “Boom Boom”.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sons, Adam Mikelson and Benjamin (Courtney); grandson, Baker Milo Mikelson; his brother, David (Kathi) Mikelson; his brothers-and sisters-in-law, Michael and Carol Van Hove, Steve and Karen Bruns, Tracy Roegner, and Steve Zehnder; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Marcella Mikelson and baby boy Mikelson; his sister and nephew Beth and Paul Zehnder; his father-and-mother-in-law, Norman and Donna Roegner; and his nephew, Andrew Barz.
Friends, family, and all others touched by Steven’s life are invited to celebrate at his memorial service at 11am, Saturday, September 28, 2024 with visitation one hour prior at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Following the service, please join family at the Red Men Club in St. Peter to continue the celebration until 3pm. Refreshments will be generously provided by Mankato Motors.
