Willie was born on February 18, 1933 to Albert and Minnie (Redning) Lindquist in St. Peter, MN. He was the eighth in line of 12 siblings. Willie was baptized March 27, 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church and confirmed on June 15, 1947. After graduating from St. Peter High School in 1951, he was enrolled at the Mankato Teacher’s College prior to volunteering for military service in the U.S. Army. Upon completing his military obligation honorably in 1958, after serving the Occupation Forces in Germany, he did masonry construction work. In July 1963, Willie accepted the position of Athletics Equipment Manager at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. He retired on June 30, 1998 after 35 years of service. Willie was united in marriage to Jacqueline O’Grady McKinley on June 18, 1971.
On September 21, 2002, Willie was inducted into the Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Hall of Fame as a benefactor. In June 2012, Willie was approved by the College’s Board of Trustees to receive one of the College’s Sesquicentennial Awards. This award was established by the Board of Trustees in honor of the college’s 150th Anniversary. The award recognizes 150 individuals or couples who have made a significant difference in the life of the college.
In March 2013, since he had not enrolled and graduated from Gustavus, Willie was selected as an Honorary Gustie by the Gustavus Alumni Association Board of Directors. It was presented to him at the Alumni Banquet during graduation weekend June 1st and 2nd, 2013.
To cap off all of the above, Gustavus proclaimed Homecoming Saturday, September 28, 2019 as “Willie Lindquist” Day. A good time had by all.
Willie was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. He enjoyed being a dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. As an avid sports fan, he loved his Gusties, Vikings, and Twins.
