Winnifred "Winnie" Gertrude Kunst

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Winnifred “Winnie” Kunst on August 6, 2024, at the age of 99. The second youngest of eight children, Winnie was born on January 11, 1925, in McIntosh, SD, to William A. and Pearl Hanson. She would often tell stories about her young life on the “frontier” in South Dakota and would return for visits throughout her life. From the age of 12, she grew up in St. Peter.

Winnie met the love of her life and beloved husband, Lorentz “Larry” Kunst in Mankato, MN and they wed in Gainesville, TX on October 9, 1943. They were married for 73 years and were blessed with four children: Sharon, Richard, Terri, and Merri.

As a longstanding member of Sunrise Assemblies of God church, Winnie’s life was defined by sharing her joy in Christ. Her unconditional love, strength of spirit, generosity, and servant’s heart could be seen in her involvement in many church groups and her beloved ministry, the House of Shalom Christian Coffee House in St. Peter where she introduced the love of Jesus to countless young people.

In addition to being a church leader, Winnie enjoyed baking, crocheting, traveling, participating in MAPS RV Ministry, volunteering summers at church camp, studying the Bible, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Winnie is predeceased by her husband, Larry Kunst (2017), daughter Terri Ward (2023), and grandson Adam Howe. She is survived by her children, Sharon Howe-Wills, Richard (Deb) Kunst, Merri (Steve) Howe, 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Winnie will be especially remembered for her positivity, social nature, tireless energy, and willingness to help and counsel people through prayer and the Word of God.

No public services will be held.
